Welcome to the MLA Division on Arabic Literature and Culture! Members of the Division define “Arabic,” in the broadest sense, as both a multi-ethnic language and a multilingual ethnic formation. Therefore, we are interested in works written in Arabic as well as in Arab writing in other languages. We are interested in Arabic literature from the classical to the contemporary period, and we welcome comparative approaches that encompass other languages and cultures of the Middle East as well as those of Africa, Asia, Europe, the Americas, and Australia.
Although our division is young, approved by the MLA in 2009-2010, we have grown by leaps and bounds. Every year eight to twelve panels that pertain to Arabic literature and culture are approved by the MLA.
We are contemplating the formation of a new MLA division that focuses on classical and post-classical Arabic literature and culture (5th to the 18th century). If you support this initiative or have any suggestions for our current division, please feel free to contact us at: kudsieh – at – gmail.com.
We look forward to hearing from you.
